reasons-to-love-stephen-fry: Reason #186- His documentary on Manic Depression has gotten him a Emmy. “Firstly, congratulations to the other filmmakers whose excellent films I would love to be able to see. This documentary was very important to me and to Ross- the director and producer. Manic Depression is a pandemic chronic condition. I don’t suppose any one of you in this room can’t say that you don’t know somebody who suffers from Bipolar disorder or in some way perhaps yourself is in subject to mood swings. We need to understand more about it. And most of all we need to address the urgent problem of stigma. This program has been given this prestigious award delights me and delights Ross. And to be in a country like America where as someone once told me in Los Angeles ‘You may not have to be gay, you may not have to be Jewish, but by God you’ve got to be Manic Depressive!’ This is a country founded by people who took risks. This country itself has a gene pool of people who didn’t stay in their villages in Europe. They had that strange Hypermanic determination to make something of their lives; to move forward, to take risks. America understands this problem perhaps better than Europe.”
